The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Act (Act 56 of 1999) established a government agency within the Department of Higher Education and Training to give financial assistance to low-income students who seek to continue their education at public universities or TVET schools. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a helpful scheme that assists South African people with financial aid.
NSFAS applications for student funding for the 2022 academic year are opened from 1 September to 30 November 2023.Applicants are encouraged to apply at any time during the application cycle and must submit their applications on time to avoid rejection by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) officials.
Who qualifies for NSFAS online application when open?
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
How to Apply for NSFAS when it is open
Here are the steps to follow to apply for the NSFAS
- Visit the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za online
- Then, you have to click on the “myNSFAS” tab
- After that, you create your myNSFAS account
- After creating myNSFAS account, you then have to click on the “Apply” tab
- Answer the following questions you see on your screen
- Update all your personal information
- Upload all the required supporting documents
- Lastly, Click on “Submit” to send your application for review.
Who should not apply?
- Students that have completed a previous qualification.
- Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
- Students who have already applied, qualified and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
- Foreign students (any student who is not a South African citizen).
