The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-sponsored bursary that pays for registration, tuition, and monthly allowances for students.

NSFAS supports South African students with bursaries that cover registration, tuition, and monthly allowances. So, do they put money into private colleges and universities? Continue reading to learn more.

Many have asked whether they fund students at private colleges and institutions. The answer is NO they do not.

Only South African students planning to study at public universities or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions are eligible for NSFAS support.

Who qualifies for NSFAS funding?

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

How to Apply for NSFAS funding

  1. Visit NSFAS Online Application 2022 portal: www.nsfas.org.za/apply-online-2022
  2. Then, you create your myNSFAS account
  3. After that, you click on theApply tab on the NSFAS page
  4. Update all your NSFAS online Application 2022-2023 information.
  5. Upload your supporting documents
  6. Submit your application by clicking on the “SUBMIT” button

After NSFAS receives confirmation from the Institution that an academic offer has been granted to you, application results will be sent to all applicants. This will be sent to you via SMS, email, and your myNSFAS account before the start of the academic year.

Once you are approved for NSFAS funding, the funding covers you until you finish your qualification. This does however depend on whether you continue to meet the academic criteria. You just need to focus on studying and passing your modules to secure your continued funding.
