Brief on university of cape town

UCT began as the South African College, a boys’ high school, in 1829.
The College originated as a tiny tertiary-education school that grew rapidly around 1880, when gold and diamond discoveries in the north – and the demand for mining skills that resulted – provided the financial drive for expansion. Between 1880 and 1900, the College grew into a full-fledged university, thanks to increased private and government funding.

At this time, women’s admittance into the labor was also a significant development.
Paul Daniel Hahn, a chemistry professor, persuaded the Council to allow four women to join his chemistry class on a trial basis in 1886.
In commemoration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1887, the College decided to let women students on a permanent basis due to their high work standards.

Learn how to calculate your admissions point score (APS)

The percentage obtained in the National Senior Certificate examinations (preliminary and final examinations) will be used to provide an admission score.

When deciding on admission, the aggregate of six subjects is taken into account, eliminating Life Orientation but including English and any mandatory subject(s) for the appropriate program. For example, if a program requires Maths and Physical Sciences, we will compute the NSC score for the APS using English, Maths, Physical Sciences, and the next best three subjects other than Life Orientation.
